Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is responsible, in behalf of the Commonwealth Government of Australia, for the regulation and safety oversight of Australia's transport fleet & management of Australia's international maritime obligations. AMSA is funded largely across levies on the shipping industry.
Marine safety activities by AMSA:
the provision, operation & maintenance of a network of marine helps to navigation, for instance, lighthouses;
ensuring a fitness & safe operation of Australian & foreign vessels within Australian waters;
administering a certification of seafarers
the provision of a marine distress & safety communications network; and
a operation of Australia's delivery Coordination Centre & coordination of look for & rescue operations for civilian aircraft & vessels within distress.
AMSA aims to protect a marine environment by:
administering software download to check & respond to the threat of ship-sourced marine pollution; and
managing Australia's Subject Project to combat pollution of the sea by oil & other harmful and risky substances.
